FAQ
What is the Flesch-Kincaid Reading Ease score?
It is a readability metric that rates text on a 0-100 scale. A score of 60-70 is considered standard for most adults. Higher scores mean the text is easier to read.
What does the Grade Level mean?
The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level estimates the US school grade needed to understand the text. A score of 8.0 means an eighth grader should be able to comprehend it.
How are syllables counted?
Syllables are estimated using a heuristic that counts vowel groups in each word, subtracts silent terminal "e" sounds, and ensures every word has at least one syllable. It is accurate for most English text.
Can the score be negative or over 100?
The Reading Ease formula can produce values outside 0-100 for unusual text. Very long sentences with many syllables may yield negative scores, while extremely simple text may exceed 100.
